Game 1 With Juan Marichal on the mound for the Giants and Steve Carlton with the ball for the Philles, a pitchers duel was in the making. Marichal gave up a lead off single to Pete Rose and it looked like the Phils would get things started early, but Marichal shut down the next three hitters and the Phils couldn't score. Felipe Alou lead off the 1st for the Giants with a double, Jose Pagan moved him to 3rd on a grounder to 2nd followed by a base hit by Willie Mays and the Giants took a 1-0 lead.
